	Big Root Morning Glory (Ipomoea pandurata)	A trailing perennial vine with wide, heart-shaped leaves. White flowers are bell-shaped to 8 cm long, equally broad, with lavender throats. Male and female flower parts extrude from the throat. Bloom May-July.

	Narrow-leaved Skullcap (Scutellaria integrifolia)	Perennial 20-80 cm tall. Leaves are opposite with smooth margins. Flowering inflorescence is up to 20 cm long. Tubular violet-blue flowers, 2-5 cm long, are 2-lipped with 3 lobes and 2 lobes. Basal part of the tube is abruptly bent. Blooms May-June.
	Narrowleaf Sabaia (Sabatia brachiata)	Annual herb, 15-50 cm tall. Stem leaves are opposite 2-5 cm long, 4-10 mm wide. Flowers are pink to rosy pink, occasionally white, with 5 petals, 1-2 cm long with yellow bases outlined in red. One of our showiest flowers. Blooms Late May-July.
	Netted Chain Fern (Woodwardia areolata)	Fronds 3-8 dm tall, once divided and joined in a wide wing along the frond rachis. Sterile fronds shorter than fertile with green petioles. Fertile leaves with purple-brown, shiny thick petioles 2X as long as the blades. Fruits June-Sept.
	New York Fern (Thelypteris noveboracensis)	Fronds are widely sword like, 5-15 cm wide, divided twice. Divisions cut completely to the midrib. It is characteristic the way in which the divisions are reduced equally at the top and bottom of the frond. Fruits May-Aug.
	Northern Dewberry (Rubus flagellaris)	Perennial to 2 m long, trailing stems with prickles. Leaves divided into 3 leaflets on flowering branches. Leaves 2-8 cm long , 1-5 cm wide. Flowers have 5 white petals, 1.5-2.5 cm long. Delicious fruit in July. Blooms Late April-Late May.
	Nuttalls Lobelia (Lobelia nuttallii)	Annual 30-60 cm tall. Stem leaves 1-3.5 cm long, 1-4 cm wide. Flowers on short stalks subtended by slender bracts. Petals are united, pale blue to whitish, 8-11 mm long with 2 flaring lobes above and 3 below. Blooms May-early Oct.

	Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata)	Annual herb 1.5-6 dm tall. Divided leaves are sensitive to touch with a saucer-shaped gland near the middle of the petiole. 1-6 flowers appear in clusters in leaf axils. Bright yellow petals are 1-2 cm long. Blooms June-Sept.
	Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata )	Repent or climbing vine to 2 m long. Leaf blades are 3-5 lobed, 6-15 cm long, 6-15 cm wide. Flowers are mostly solitary from leaf axils. Petals are bluish to white, 3-4 cm long, with lavendar parts banded in purple. Blooms May-July.

	Sandhills Ground-cherry (Physalis lanceolata)	Perennial endemic to the Sandhills. 25 cm or less tall, branched, and covered with rough hairs. Leaves 3.5-7 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, have wavy margins. Bell-shaped, dull yellow flowers, 18 mm across, are solitary on drooping stalks. Blooms May-Jul.
	Sandhills Thistle (Cirsium repandum)	Biennial 0.5-0.7 m tall with cobwebby hairs. Stems are leafy to apex, spreading and spiny. Purple tubular flowers occur in dense heads 3.5 cm across. Blooms mid May-July.
	Savanna Bog Buttons (Lachnocaulon anceps)	Perennial forming mats. Leaves numerous, basal, 2-8 cm long, 3 mm wide. Flowering stalks 5-25 cm long twisted in a spiral, narrowly ridged. White flowers grow in a single round dense head atop each stalk. Heads are 4-7 mm across. Blooms mid May-late Sept.
	Savanna Meadow Beauty (Rhexia alifanus)	Perennial herb grows to 1 m tall. Leaves grow to 7 cm long and 1 cm wide. Flowers are purple with 4 petals that are glandular beneath, 16-22 mm long. Anthers are 6-7.5 mm long. Fruit is urnshaped. Blooms May-Oct.
	Savanna Milkwort (Polygala ramosa)	Hairless biennial 10-30 cm tall. Spatulate basal leaves form flat rosette. Stem leaves are linear to 20 mm long. Brilliant yellow flowers grow in dense terminal heads forming an umbrella-shaped inflorescence. Blooms June-August.
	Savanna Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum flexuosum)	Perennial with gray, hoary, quadrangular stems 4-11 dm tall. Leaves are 1.5-5 cm long, 3-15 mm wide. Petals are white to lavender, 4-6 mm long. Blooms June-Aug.
	Savanna Seedbox (Ludwigia virgata)	Perennial 30-60 cm tall. Leaves alternate, sessile 2-3 cm long, 1 cm wide. A few to many yellow flowers grow on one side of the inflorescence. 4 sepals are reflexed, 4 petals are obovate, 10-16 mm long. Blooms mid June-early Sept.
	Savanna Tickseed (Coreopsis linifolia )	Perennial herb 0.5-1 m tall. Leaves 3-15 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide, much reduced upward. Flower heads occur on long slender stalks forming a flat to multi-layered cluster. Ray flowers are yellow, toothed at tip. Disc flowers are maroon red. Blooms July-Oct.
	Savanna Yellow-eyed Grass (Xyris ambigua)	Perennial 45-90 cm tall. Leaves are 15-30 cm long, 5-12 mm wide, not twisted, and form a broad fan. Flowers grow from a cone-like head atop the stem and open mornings. The 3 petals are yellow, obovate, 5 mm long. Blooms July-Sept.
	Sericea Lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata)	Invasive perennial with stems 3-12 dm tall. Leaves are divided into 3 grey-green leaflets 1-2.5 cm long. Flowers in clusters in the axils of the upper and medium leaves. Petals are creamy white marked with violet purple. Blooms July-Sept.
	Sheepbit (Jasione montana)	Annual herb 2-5 dm tall. Leaves are 1-3 cm long, 1.4-4 mm wide, sessile. Flowers are blue to lavender, in heads 2-3 cm broad. Blooms June-Sept.
	Showy Rattlebox (Crotalaria spectabilis)	Annual over 1 m tall. Stems hairy. Leaves ovate, 5-20 cm long. Many flowers grow on stalks up to 0.5 m long. Petals are yellow, 15-25 mm long. Plant is an invasive alien often used for wildlife food plots. Blooms July-Sept.
	Slender Goldentop (Euthamia caroliniana)	Perennial herb 0.3-0.8 m tall, branched above to form a flat-topped inflorescence. The numerous leaves are 2-7 cm long and 1-3 mm wide, 1 veined and curved. Heads are 8-12 flowered, about 4 mm wide. Blooms late Aug.-Oct.
	Slender Wild Lettuce (Lactuca graminifolia var. graminifolia)	Biennial to 1 m tall. Sap milky. Leaves alternate, mostly basal 10-30 cm long, 1-5 cm wide, irregularly lobed. Flower heads are 10 mm across. Ray flowers are blue to violet. Disc flowers absent. Seeds disperse via a parachute of white hairs. Blooms Late Ap
	Small-head Beak Sedge (Rhynchospora microcephala)	Perennial 5-8.5 cm tall. Blades 1-2 mm wide. Flowering glomerules 4-16 mm across, terminal and in 2-5 globose fascicles from leaf axils. Spiklets 3-3.5 mm long. Nutlets brownish with yellow centers, with 6 retrorsely barbed bristles. Blooms July-Oct.
	Small-leaved White Snakeroot (Ageratina aromatica)	Perennial, 35-65 cm tall. Opposite leaves are 3-7 cm long, 1.5-5 cm wide, bluntly toothed. Leafstalks 1-2 cm. Inflorescence has terminal clusters of bright white flower heads. Rays are absent. Blooms Aug.-Oct.
	Smalls Goldenrod; Pineywoods Goldenrod (Solidago pinetorum)	Perennial with stems 3-12 dm tall. Basal leaves, 7-15 cm long, 0.5-2.5 cm wide with teeth. Stem leaves reduced upward, with fascicles of small leaves in axils. Inflorescence is about as long as broad. Ray flowers are yellow, secund. Blooms July-Oct.
	Smooth-leaf Elephants Foot (Elephantopus nudatus)	Perennial with basal leaves 2-7 cm wide, giving the plant its common name. Purple flowers are all tubular. Three overlapping leaf-like bracts at the base of each flowering head form a triangle. Blooms late July-Sept.
	Soft Milkpea (Galactia mollis)	Densely soft, hairy, trailing perennial with sparse leaves divided into 3 elliptic leaflets, 2-5 cm long. 1-6 flowers grow at tips of long stalk, 10-20 cm tall. Petals are pinkish. Blooms May-July.
	Soft Rush (Juncus effusus)	Perennial forming tufts of sharp-tipped, green, photosynthetic stems, 0.5-1.2 m tall. Leaves absent. Flowers grow in a loose cluster from upper stem; not terminal. 3 Petals and 3 sepals look alike. Blooms June-Sept.
	Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum)	Medium to large tree with alternate, deciduous leaves 0.8-2 dm long, 2.5-7 cm wide. Inflorescence is a terminal panicle of racemes. Flowers are urn-shaped, 5-8 mm long. Blooms June-July.
	Southern Flowering Spurge (Euphorbia pubentissima)	Perennial to 60 cm tall, branched above. Lower leaves alternate. Mid to upper leaves opposite, 2-6 cm long, 5-30 mm wide. Flowers are 3-8 mm broad. Petals absent, replaced by white petal-like glands 1-4 mm long. Blooms late March-July.
	Spoon-leaf Sundew (Drosera intermedia)	Rose colored perennial insectivorous plant. Leaves narrowly spoon-shaped with tentacle-like glandular hairs 7-15 mm long that trap insects. Leaf stalks are 3-4X as long as the blade. Flowers have 5 white petals 5-8 mm long. Blooms July-Sept.
	Spurred Butterfly Pea (Centrosemma virginiana)	Perennial herbaceous vine to 2 m long. Leaves are divided into 3 narrowly ovate leaflets 2-7 cm long. One to several flowers grow from slender stalks from the leaf axils. Bluish to purple flowers are 2.5-3.5 cm across. Blooms late June-early Sept.
	St. Andrews Cross (Hypericum hypericoides)	Shrub to 1 m tall. Leaves opposite, sessile, 8-25 mm long, 2-7 mm wide. Flowers grow from leaf axils. The 2 outer sepals are ovate 6-12 mm wide. The 2 inner sepals are very small or absent. The 4 petals are yellow, 6-10 mm long. Blooms late May-Sept.
	St. Peters Cross (Hypericum crux-andreae)	Slender shrub to 1 m tall. Bark is reddish brown. Leaves are opposite, 1-4 cm long, 6-20 mm wide. Yellow flowers grow on stalks from leaf axils. The 2 outer sepals are broadly ovate. The 4 yellow petals are 6-15 mm long, 2-3 mm wide. Blooms June-Sept.
	Sticky False Foxglove / Southern Oakleach (Areolaria pectinata)	Bushy annual with short, gland-tipped hairs, parasitic on roots of black oaks. Numerous leaves are opposite, 2-6 cm long, 8-21 mm wide, divided into narrow toothed segments. United yellow petals with 5 lobes 3.5-5 cm long and wide. Blooms Late May-Sept.
	Sticky Golden-aster (Pityopsis aspera)	Perennial 0.5 m tall. Stems, branches and flowers stalks with dense gland-tipped hairs. Leaves numerous, grasslike. The lower ones 5-25 cm long, to 12 mm wide, silky pubescent. Flower heads are 12 mm wide with yellow ray and disc flowers. Blooms July-Oct
	Summer Bluet (Houstonia purpurea)	Perennial with narrowly winged stem 10-30 cm tall. Stem leaves are opposite, sessile 2-6 cm long, 8-25 mm wide with 3-7 prominent veins. Lavender to white flowers grow in clusters. Petals are united. Tube is 5-7 mm long with 4 lobes. Blooms mid May-July.
	Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia)	Shrub to 2.5 m tall. Leaves are simple, alternate, hairy beneath. Fragrant white, stalked flowers appear in terminal unbranched inflorescences. Blooms June-July.
	Tall Seedbox (Ludwigia alternifolia)	Short-lived perennial to 1.2 m tall. Leaves are 5-10 cm long , 1-1.5 cm wide, sessile. Flowers grow singly in axils of the branch leaves. Petals 4, yellow, broadly obovate, 6mm long and wide. Blooms Jun.-Sept.
	Tawny Goats Rue (Tephrosia spicata)	Perennial with dense tawny hairs. Leaves divided into 9-19 leaflets 12-25 mm long, 6-12 mm wide. One to several pea-shaped flowers grow at tips of long cylindrical stalks from leaf axils. Flowers are white quickly turning pink then maroon. Blooms June-Aug.
	Ti Ti (Cyrilla racemiflora)	Tall shrub. Leaves are semi-evergreen, simple, alternate, widest above the middle,to 10 cm long and 4 cm wide. White, stalked flowers appear on numerous inflorescences 5-15 cm long from previous year's growth. Blooms May-July.
	Toothed White-topped Aster (Sericocarpus asteroides)	Perennial 20-60 cm tall, pubescent. Basal leaves 2.5-10 cm long, toothed with fine pale hairs, present at flowering. Flowers grow in flat-topped inflorescence. The 3-7 ray flowers are white, 3-6 mm long. Disk flowers,dull white. Blooms May-July.
	Twining Snoutbean (Rhynchosa tomentosa)	Erect perennial, 1.5 dm tall with strongly-angled, hairy stems. Leaves are divided into 3 leaflets 2-8 cm long, 1/3 to 1/2 as wide, conspicuously veined with a velvety feel. Yellow flowers are closely clustered. Blooms June-Aug.
	Twisted Leaf White-topped Aster (Sericocarpus tortifolius)	Perennial 40-100 cm tall, branched in the upper 1/4 and densely hairy. 	Virginia Meadow Beauty (Rhexia virginica)	Perennial to 45-80 cm tall, branched, hairy. Leaves opposite, 7 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, 3-nerved. Flowers occur in a branched inflorescence. The 4 petals are rosy, 15-20 mm long, oblique lengthwise with gland-tipped hairs on back. Blooms late June-Sept.
	Water Lily (Nymphea odorata)	Perennial aquatic herb with almost round leaves, purple beneath, to 3 dm wide. Flowers float. Petals are white or pink, 2-10 cm long. Blooms June-Sept.
	Water-shield (Bresenia schreberi)	Perennial aquatic. Plant thickly covered with clear viscous jelly. Leaves alternate, floating. Maroon flowers grow singly from leaf axils, slightly raised above water surface. Petals 12-20 mm, recurved to reveal erect stamen. Blooms Jun.-Oct.
	Wetland Flax (Linum striatum)	Slender, hairless perennial 30-90 cm tall with low ridges on stem. Leaves are opposite to mid stem and alternate above, 10-30 mm long, 3-10 mm wide. Pale yellow flowers have 5 petals 3-5 mm long. Fruit is a round capsule 3 mm long. Blooms Jun.-Oct.
	White Clover (Trifolium repens)	Perennial with creeping stems 1-4 dm long. Leaves palmately divided into 3 leaflets 1-3 cm long. Flowering stalks 1-2.5 dm long. Inflorescence is nearly globose, 1-3 cm in diameter. 40-80 white to pinkish flowers per flower head. Blooms April-Sept.
	White Fringed Orchid (Platanthera blephariglottis)	Perennial to 76 cm tall. Leaves are lance-shaped 5-35 cm long, 1-5 cm wide. White stalked flowers grow in a dense cylindrical raceme. Long slender fringe adorns the margin of the lower petal or lip. One of our rare orchids. Blooms July-Aug.
	White Meadow Beauty (Rhexia mariana var. exalbida)	Colonial perennial to 35 cm tall. Stem is unbranched. Leaves are opposite, tapered with short hairs. White flowers grow in a branched inflorescence. The 4 petals are 10-18 mm long, oblique lengthwise. Stamens are curved. Blooms late May-Sept.
	White Thoroughwort (Eupatorium album)	Perennial with erect hairy stems 4-8 dm tall. Larger leaves are 1.5-3 cm wide, 6 times as long as wide and reduced in size toward apex. All are hairy and have resin glands. Tiny white flowers are clustered in heads. Blooms June-Sept.

	Wild Sensitive Plant (Chamaecrista nictitans)	Annual plant 1-5 dm tall. Divided leaves are sensitive to touch with an slender-stalked, umbrella-shaped gland just below the lowest leaflets. Petals are bright yellow, unequal, 3-7 mm long. Blooms June-Oct.
	Winged Sumac (Rhus copallina)	Shrub or small tree to 7 m tall. Leaves are divided into 9-23 leaflets 3-8 cm long. The leaf stem (rachis) is winged. Tiny cream colored flowers are in terminal branched inflorescences 0.5-3 dm long and broad. Blooms July-Sept.
	Wire-plant (Stipulicida setacea )	Extremely slender annual. The single stem grows to 12 cm long, widely forked into wire-like segments. Basal leaves overwinter then disappear. Stem leaves are just 1-2 mm long. Flowers terminal, 5 mm across with 5 tiny white petals. Blooms May-Aug.
